Canada as the 51st State? with Norman Hillmer

Donald Trump wants Canada to be his 51st State. He isn’t the first American leader to think that way, and he won’t be the last. One of the leading historians of the Canadian-American relationship reflects on how Canada resisted the United States in the past, and he asks whether and how much present challenges are different from yesterday’s.

Norman Hillmer is the 2025 Slater Family Scholar at the Max Bell School of Public Policy, McGill University, and a Chancellor’s Professor at Carleton University. Among his thirty-two books is For Better or For Worse: Canada and the United States into the Twenty-First Century, written with J. L. Granatstein.

This event is presented in partnership with Laurier’s Faculty of Arts: Celebrating 100 Years, the Department of History and Office of Research Services.
